| Most people have heard the expression “A diamond in the rough.” The metaphor is often used to describe something which lacks certain attributes, but can be expected to evolve into an item of quality. The phrase originated from diamonds in their natural state. These gems are called Rough Diamonds. Rough diamonds are also called “dirty diamonds,” because they are stones that have not been washed or polished. Rough diamonds are stones that possess the potential to become gems of the highest quality.
Rough diamonds were initially discovered in India, in 800 B.C., and according to legend, they were believed to capture the earth’s power, and hold a charismatic appeal for the wearer
Natural diamonds are formed deep within the earth’s core. Approximately 260 tons of raw ore must be brought up from the depths of the Earth to make a one-carat diamond of gem quality.
A carat is the measurement used to determine the weight of a diamond. It does not refer to a diamond’s quality. The quality is indicated by the diamond’s cut, clarity, and hue.
During the mining process, the raw diamonds are divided into piles by sorters and categorized in regard to size, shape and quality. Only about 20 per cent of the gems make the cut as stones of quality. Less than 2% of these are of such high grade that they may be considered investment quality.
Rough Diamond Jewelry
Most jewelry outlets have little if any chance to buy rough diamonds because these stones are very difficult to find. In fact, there are only a few companies in the world offering diamonds in their natural state, preserving the beauty and energy of the stones. The folks at these firms are pioneers in this niche. They adhere to firm rules when choosing quality gems.. Their diamonds are washed but not processed or polished. Each stone is different and has an identity of its own. In fact, each piece of jewelry seems to be made to order for a particular customer. Some people are almost magnetically drawn to certain pieces by the energy field of the rough diamonds. |
